Man Was On Fire Near Indonesia State Palace

A 40-year-old man was rushed to the hospital after police saw him on fire near the State Palace on Wednesday afternoon.

Gambir subdistrict police chief detective Taufik said that at around 5:30 p.m., a number of police officers stationed at the National Monument were surprised to see a burning man running towards a billboard of the president.

“The victim ran to the billboard and suddenly fell,” Taufik said.

Police attempted to extinguish the fire that had by then burned the victim’s shirt and pants.

“Officers attempted to put out the fire with mineral water,” he said, adding that they also rolled the victim on the grass.

After the fire was extinguished, the police rushed the victim to Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital (RSCM) in Central Jakarta.

The victim is being treated for burns on about 90 percent of his body.

It was not clear how the man was set on fire, but a number of online news portals have suggested it was an act of self-immolation.

“We don’t know why yet because the victim cannot be questioned,” he said.
