Indonesian energy minister sacked for holding dual citizenship

This is the case embarrassing for Indonesia. One minister only served for 20 days.

President Joko Widodo looked so proud to have been appointed Arcandra as energy minister in late July during the second cabinet reshuffle.

Shortly thereafter, the president was forced to fire him. It happened because of the inaccuracy of government or there may be some element of intent.

Arcandra Tahar, who became minister of energy and mineral resources last month, was sacked following a dispute over his citizenship.

India's president on Sunday approved harsher punishments for rapists, including the death penalty, after a brutal gang-rape in New Delhi sparked national outrage and triggered demands for tougher laws.

President Pranab Mukherjee gave his assent to the new rape law two days after cabinet ministers recommended changes to improve safety for women.

"The Indian president has given his assent to the ordinance on crime against women. It comes into effect immediately but it will also be tabled before the parliament," a senior officer in the president's office told AFP.

A government-appointed panel and the cabinet had recommended tougher laws after the death of a 23-year-old woman who was savagely raped and attacked in a bus on December 16 and died nearly two weeks later.

Under the changes, the minimum sentence for gang-rape, rape of a minor, rape by policemen or a person in authority will be doubled to 20 years from 10 and can be extended to life without parole.
In the existing law, a rapist faces a term of seven to 10 years

In the existing law, a rapist faces a term of seven to 10 years.

The cabinet has also created a new set of offences such as voyeurism and stalking that will be included in the new law.

But women rights activists have slammed the ordinance saying it lacks teeth to fight sexual crimes against women and lashed out at the government for passing the law without holding a debate or discussion.

Five men are being tried in a special fast-track court in New Delhi on charges of murder, gang-rape and kidnapping in connection with the death of the student, who died from her injuries in a Singapore hospital where she had been sent for further treatment.

A sixth suspect faces trial in a juvenile court.

The physiotherapy student was assaulted on a bus she had boarded with a male companion as they returned home from watching a film in an upmarket shopping mall.

India says it only imposes the death penalty in the "rarest of rare cases". Three months ago, it hanged the lone surviving gunman from the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks - the country's first execution in eight years.

Meanwhile noted criminal lawyer Kamini Jaiswal favours death sentence for rapists, she felt that catching the right people was as important.

Yudhoyono gets lost in translation at UN

Jakarta Globe

Some of the luster of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s visit to New York faded earlier this week after he apparently fumbled a press conference at United Nations headquarters.

Yudhoyono backed out of a reception hosted by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon after the awkward incident on Wednesday, even though his presence had been confirmed by Indonesian officials, according to some delegates.

Instead, the President went directly to the Millennium UN Plaza Hotel, where he has been staying while in town for the General Assembly.

The incident began at a press conference on Wednesday featuring Yudhoyono, Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and UK Prime Minister David Cameron on stage to discuss the High-level Panel on Post-2015 Development Agenda, which the trio co-chair.

As the press conference proceeded, an apparently confused President did not respond to a question asked by a European radio reporter speaking in English.

When Yudhoyono failed to respond after the reporter repeated her question, an Indonesian interpreter rushed to the podium to translate for the President, making his way past a security guard who attempted to block him.

The reporter had asked Yudhoyono to elaborate on his call for an international instrument to ban blasphemy in the aftermath of violent riots following the distribution of the US-made anti-Muslim film Innocence of Muslims on the Internet.

“When you made a statement about the instrument, were you speaking specifically about anti-blasphemy? Could you elaborate a little bit more on that?” the reporter asked.

Yudhoyono, who speaks English, was silent, raising his eyebrows and turning his head in an apparent search for a translator.

When the question was repeated after several moments of silence, a still mute Yudhoyono looked to Sirleaf and Cameron, neither of whom aided the President.

The President was saved when the interpreter, at last, joined him at the podium.

Other Indonesian officials at the press conference might not have been able to aid the President due to the crowd of journalists.

Although the Foreign Ministry’s director-general for multilateral relations, Hasan Kleib, was near the podium, it was the interpreter, apparently spontaneously, who stepped in to aid the President.

Yudhoyono eventually answered the question, albeit in a less-than-pleased tone.

“I think your question is not closely connected to the message of this panel to prepare new global collaboration to combat poverty. I have made my statement in my speech delivered before the General Assembly on that matter. But we have to learn to work together in this world by respecting other beliefs, faiths, and religions,” Yudhoyono said.

Some foreign journalists made light of the incident when leaving the press conference. “Indonesian is really confusing,” one reporter said to the laughter of his colleagues.

Yudhoyono may have been reluctant to speak in English later in the day in a discussion with billionaire philanthropist George Soros, Singaporean academic Kishore Mahbubani and moderator Donald K. Emmerson.

All spoke, except Yudhoyono, who apparently hesitated to join the discussion, laughing only when the others panelists laughed.

The moderator was eager to ask Yudhoyono one question before concluding the discussion, which was unrelated to the press conference but about a topic that the President had presumably mastered: his role as a co-chair of the Post-2015 panel.

Military plane crashes into Jakarta homes; 10 die

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — An Indonesian air force plane slammed into a military housing complex and ignited a huge fireball yestersday while trying to land in Jakarta, killing all seven people aboard as well as two toddlers and their nanny in a home.

The pilot, co-pilot and five trainees aboard the Fokker F-27 were on a routine training flight when it crashed into houses in a neighbourhood about 1.5 kilometres (nearly a mile) from the runway where it was trying to land, Indonesian military spokesmen said.

Raging orange flames jumped several metres into the air and a huge column of black smoke billowed over the eight homes damaged in the crash in eastern Jakarta.

Twelve people were injured, two of them critically.

"I could hardly believe my eyes. There was a military plane that crashed and hit the houses!" said Hendra, a resident of the air force complex who goes by only one name. "At once, the situation turned into chaos. All the residents fled in panic. Women and children were screaming hysterically."

He said he helped at least five injured people, mostly with burns, to a nearby air force hospital.

Six of the people aboard the plane died instantly, and the co-pilot died later while being treated at a hospital, air force spokesman Rear Adm. Azman Yunus said.

The plane broke into two parts as it ripped through the houses and plummeted to the ground, said air force spokesman Col. Agus Sasongko Jati. The three people killed on the ground were two children in one of the houses, aged two and six, and a woman who worked as their caretaker, he added.

The aircraft, which was built in 1958 and has been used by Indonesia's air force for the past 35 years with 14,900 flight hours, was declared airworthy before it took off for its second training flight of the day under clear skies, he said.

"It seemed that the pilot was trying to land on a nearby paddy field," Jati told The Associated Press. "But it was not clear whether it was because of an emergency."

A running text on TVOne said the black boxes of the ill-fated plane have been discovered, but Jati did not confirm.

Rescuers halted searching until tomorrow for more possible victims among the charred rubble of the burning houses, and a number of ambulances were parked inside the air force's Rajawali Complex.

The crash comes after a Russian Sukhoi passenger jet crashed last month into an Indonesian volcano during a demonstration flight for potential buyers, killing all 45 people aboard.
